Patrick Bamford was the match winner in our Carabao Cup Third Round tie against Middlesbrough, scoring 2 goals following a Tommy Elphick sending off.
Elphick was shown a second yellow card after bringing Bamford down in the penalty area, and he made no hesitation in putting the visitors 1-0 up in the 2nd half. Bamford’s second came with just 23 minutes remaining, scoring an easy header to knock Villa out of the EFL Cup.
Positives that be taken from the game are predominantly based around the U23 players that were given yet another cup run out, and although sadly it would be their last in the Carabao Cup this season, Jake Doyle-Hayes and Callum O’Hare once again showed their talents. Ritchie De Laet was also able to complete another 90 minutes as he heads back towards full fitness.
Speaking post-match, Steve Bruce was quick to deter any attention away from the loss, instead turning heads towards Saturday’s clash against Nottingham Forest. “We know what the most important thing is for us,” Bruce told the official website, “we have to mount a challenge in this division.”

Fans are now firmly looking forward to what will be a difficult home game versus the men in red, which will be shown live on Sky Sports Football (Kick-off @ 5:30PM GMT). Momentum is key following a 3-0 win against Barnsley, and Steve Bruce must now show that last weekend’s efforts were no fluke.
Our fan poll on Twitter shows that a midweek defeat to Middlesbrough hasn’t dented confidence, with 67% of fans believing the Villa boys will win. It will no doubt be a tough contest, but another 3 points and we may possibly be heading towards better things.
